Netflix’s ‘Court of Gold’ Captures Olympic Drama Under One Surprising Condition

Jake Rogal was in charge of directing a six-part series focusing on the basketball players aiming for gold at the Olympics. I recently had an opportunity to interview Rogal regarding his new project, which will be available for streaming alongside top shows on Netflix soon. Upon viewing the documentary, I questioned whether they had unrestricted access during filming, and he confirmed that they did. Nevertheless, Rogal also disclosed that he explicitly conveyed certain points to the coaches right from the start:

In essence, we had unrestricted privileges to enter, but the coaches decided the level of access they were comfortable granting us. We made it clear to them, «Listen, if a situation gets heated, don’t hesitate to ask us to leave. We get that.» Initially, they allowed us inside and would escort us out during intense periods when they deemed necessary. However, Coach Pešić was the one who often asked us to step out of the locker room. Overall, we had extensive contact with the teams, thanks to the IOC placing us in advantageous situations. The coaches held ultimate authority over our access, thus controlling how much they let us see.

I admire how openly Jake Rogal communicated with the coaches during the documentary production. From his remarks, it seems he held his subjects in high regard, which is evident from the respectful approach he took. Moreover, I suppose that such a condition relieved some tension for the teams since they didn’t have to evade cameras during stressful times. However, even with this agreement, Rogal and his team successfully documented some genuinely nerve-wracking scenarios.

In Jake Rogal’s newest series, viewers will join the journeys of four men’s Olympic basketball teams: USA, Canada, France, and Serbia. The rosters feature a diverse mix of players and personalities such as Kevin Durant, Nikola Jokić, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nicholas Batum, among others. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to learn about Victor Wembanyama, the promising French basketball prodigy who is making waves in the NBA currently.

The creative team had a great deal of freedom in their work, which allowed them to cram so much into the show as we see hinted at in the «Court of Gold» trailer.
